Frequently Asked Questions

  • Finding the right counsellor is about feeling safe, heard, and understood. A good fit means you can share your thoughts and feelings openly, and feel supported as you explore challenges and work toward your goals. The consultation is a chance to ask questions, share your concerns, and see if their counselling approach aligns with what you’re looking for.

  • The free consultation is a brief, no-pressure conversation to get to know each other and see if counselling feels like the right fit. You can ask questions about the therapy process, my approach, and what to expect in sessions. It’s also a chance to share a little about what’s bringing you to counselling, so we can explore how I might best support you. By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of whether this is the right space for your growth and well-being.

  • Your first session is a chance to share an overview of your life so I can understand your experiences and challenges in context. We’ll explore what’s been going on, what’s important to you, and how your past experiences might be affecting your current situation. This helps provide clarity and sets the foundation for working together to address your goals and support your growth and well-being.

  • While every person’s journey is unique, a general recommendation is to start with around five sessions to begin noticing meaningful changes. Some people find significant insight and relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over a longer period. Counselling is a collaborative process, and together we’ll check in regularly to see how you’re progressing and adjust the plan to best meet your needs.

  • Therapy is a personal and gradual process, and signs of progress can look different for everyone. You may notice feeling more understood, calm, or able to manage emotions in challenging situations. Over time, relationships, thought patterns, and daily habits may shift in ways that feel healthier and more balanced. Regularly reflecting on your goals and discussing your experiences with your counsellor can help you see the progress you’re making and adjust your work in therapy as needed.

  • Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in mental health. They can assess and diagnose mental health conditions and are able to prescribe medication as part of treatment.

    Psychologist
A psychologist holds a doctoral degree in psychology and is trained to assess, diagnose, and provide therapy for mental health concerns. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication.

    Counsellors & Psychotherapists
In British Columbia, the terms “counsellor” or “psychotherapist” are not regulated, so it’s important to check credentials. Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) are members of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), hold a Master’s degree, and have completed extensive clinical training. RCCs provide therapy, assessment, and support for a range of mental health and life challenges, but they cannot prescribe medication or provide formal diagnoses.

  • We offer both in-person and virtual counselling. In-person counselling happens face-to-face in a safe and comfortable office, which can help some clients feel more grounded and connected. Virtual counselling is offered securely online, letting you attend sessions from home or wherever you feel most comfortable. Both options provide the same level of support, care, and confidentiality- the choice comes down to what works best for your schedule, lifestyle, and comfort.

  • Fees for counselling sessions vary depending on the type of service. Please refer to the services page for detailed information on individual, couples, and family counselling rates. If you have questions about fees, insurance coverage, or payment options, feel free to reach out- we’re happy to help.

  • As a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) in British Columbia, many extended health insurance plans offer coverage for therapy. Coverage varies between providers, so it’s important to confirm the details with your insurance provider before booking an appointment. We do not offer direct billing at this time. Once payment is received you'll be emailed a receipt that can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

  • Rainbow provides counselling in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. You’re welcome to speak in the language that feels most natural and comfortable for you.
